The poster reminded me I was drafted in June 1972 after completing my freshman year at Jamestown Community College. During WW II, at least in my hometown, when you turned 18, EVEN IF YOU WERE IN YOUR SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL, you were eligible to be drafted, and some boys indeed were. After serving two years Stateside (the ‘Nam was still ongoing) the GI Bill paid for the rest of my college. Is ‘Murica a great country, or what?
The 2009 Fiesta Latina was a private, invitation-only event hosted by President Barack Obama which was broadcast on PBS. If there were ads for the commercial sponsors then I don't think that would have been appropriate.
Right but the UFC is not a non-profit unlike PBS and it was done to improve the UFC's business. White contended the cost would be worth it to propel MMA further into the mainstream, stating: "This is a huge brand play."
Not my cup of tea either, but I’m not the taste police. MMA, demolition derby, NASCAR, even pro wrestling, are fine with me as long as I don’t have to go.
My two UFC-loving teenaged sons and I were by chance going to be in DC during that time, and I also by chance got two lottery tickets to the watch party at Ellipse Park, so I got them in. They absolutely LOVED it. Surrounded by enthusiastic fans, the energy, the flyovers by the planes etc. We also attended the press conference in front of the Lincoln Memorial. I'm so happy they got to have this experience during America's 250th. They'll remember it always, and it didn't at all feel cheap or commercialized. People are acting like the octagon will be a permanent structure on the White House lawn. It was just a fun party enjoyed by thousands of Americans from all over the country. Lighten up!
💯🤠👊🇺🇸 spot on Sir!

Forced service is not very "liberty." I haven't really pondered the GI bill in that context, but I do figure it's compensation for the coercion.
One can enjoy entertainment like the UFC while believing at the same time that the White House should not be used for commercial purposes.
Does that include the musical events held by past Presidents? Like the 2009 Fiesta Latina? Which, by the way, had commercial sponsors.

The UFC was invitation only as well.

"it was done to improve the UFC's business"
You know this... how?

I must admit that, when my brother and I took his then ten year old son to a monster truck event, we had a grand old time.

Rather watch a UFC fight than golf.
