The big news in my neck of the woods a couple weeks ago was the victory of self-affirmed socialist Zohran Mamdani in New York City's Democratic primary for mayor. While he's not mayor yet, in a city where people would rather chew hot asphalt than vote for anyone other than the name on the D party line, there's a good chance that he will get to bring his idiotic ideas to Gracie Mansion and do unto New Yorkers the way other socialist morons have done unto other people.
His chances are enhanced by Andrew Cuomo, his strongest challenger (and if that doesn't tell you how awful things are...) choosing (for now) to stay in the race on a third-party line. Incumbent Eric Adams, who opted out of running in the Democratic primary and will run as an independent. NYC fixture Curtis Sliwa will be the GOP's candidate, and former prosecutor Jim Walden, in my view the only good choice in the mix, is running as an independent as well. These four will split the "anyone but Mamdani" votes, and the young, earnest, and ignorant/stupid voters that handed Mamdani the nomination may very well be the largest voting bloc come November.
I am endlessly reminded of HL Mencken's admonition when I watch political races,
and it's easy/fitting to say "let the NYC voters get what they deserve."
