Socialism and Freedom

The nether parts of my brain are a seemingly bottomless pit of random recollections. Many of them are things I recall from the television of my youth - I seemingly have an extraordinary ability to recall commercial jingles.

One recently came to mind when I caught a snippet of a reel in which someone pointed out that there does not exist an instance of a socialist government coming to power and not promptly suppressing speech. As I pondered the veracity of that assertion, the song lyric “Freedom is a full time occupation, freedom is a state of mind” bubbled up from the depths.

I recalled just a bit of context: a commercial for a Broadway musical. Not much more than that.
