The New Credentialism

The screenshot I offer at the head of this post brought back to mind an infamous quip by Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor, originally made in 2001, and unearthed during her confirmation process.

I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life.

Much gnashing of teeth ensued, with some on the Right taking issue and some on the Left pushing back. While context does matter, and the "diversity speech" nature of the utterance might give the motivated something to cling to, the fuller quote doesn't really support that excuse.
