Great post, Peter!👍👍 You made a couple of awesome points - First, “Why a waste of time? Because religious fanatics don’t think like you and I do” Secondly, “As for Epic Fury itself? It’s a big gamble, with major upside but also major peril. We cannot know how it will work out, especially this soon. But, we can still celebrate the decapitation of this regime, and the elimination of one of the most evil men in recent history. I hope it goes well. And so should everyone else. Trump haters included.”
These are two very important takeaways that everyone should keep in mind. Keep up the great work!
Gotta disagree with you on this one, Peter. Yeah Khamenei was a scumbag, but the world is full of scumbags, and there's nothing in the Constitution that says American dollars and troops are supposed to be sacrificed in some vain attempt to "make the world a better place". Further, this has all indications of becoming another one of those "forever wars" that Trump has railed against for many years.
There are as always arguments to be made on both sides, but one can not dispute that this is the best opportunity in many decades to assist the the Iranian people in over throwing one of the most despotic regimes since Pol Pot. Tiny impoverished Cambodia had little influence outside it's own borders, whereas Iran's Mullahs are hell bent on bringing about Armageddon. And will, if left to their own devices. This operation may not succeed in that goal, and who replaces the mad mullahs may not be a western ally, but after paying lip service to wanting to help them, and Obama's failure to act the last time an opportunity presented, we would be strategically foolish and morally wrong to not attempt this.
I continue to be amazed at how so many supposedly smart and deep thinkers continue to believe that the Iranian theocrats could be trusted to abide by the terms of any treaty that prohibited their making HEU.
I honestly don't think any of the decision makers in the Obama or Biden administrations thought that they would abide by the terms. I believe their operating rationale was that Iran should indeed have a nuclear weapon to keep them safe from us and from Israel. If they used it on Israel, well, hell's bells.
Excellent point. This also applies to Dems' behavior during the SOTU, where they couldn't stand or applaud for anything that BOTH sides should consider right or good. They may be giving the R's a gift for the midterms with their decidedly dogmatic behavior.
The Ayotollah had to go. Still, the Iranians are responding in typical fashion by trying to involve others and escalate the matter. They hit the British base in the Southern part of Cyprus, Akrotiri, though the damage was minor. The far-reaching effects of Epic Fury remain to be seen.
They are lashing out in whatever limited ability they have. We must also remember the Shia-Sunni rift, which explains why they don't mind bombing Arab lands.
Without doubt a nuclear Iran is an existential threat. I think that is undeniable. It is also obvious that Iran has been engaging in an undeclared proxy war against the United States for years. Those things matter less to many people, than their unmitigated hatred of Trump and their desire to dethrone him. To them, there is no such thing as America first, there is only the downfall of Trump first. America be damned if that’s what it takes.
I understand the position some libertarians and skeptical conservatives are taking, to a degree. They are tired of foreign entanglements, as am I. But I also believe that too many people assign a form of rationality to the regime(s) over there that is miles removed from reality. I mean it when I write that they don't care about human life the way we do, and that they would nuke Israel, and then the US, if they could, so they could bring about their Caliphate.
BAILI!🫶

Thoughtfully written. 👏👏

I've been skeptical of many interventions, but the nuke matter makes this different, IMO.
Time will tell.

Obama didn't fail to act. He gave them pallets of cash and signed a deal to let them keep refining their uranium.

You are correct, but my point was that he failed to act during the 2009 Green Movement, on behalf of the people of Iran.
