“The ultimate goal is to cajole us into living closer to each other, on a smaller overall footprint, so that we can get around on foot, bicycles, or via public transportation.”
And to slowly transform us into good little liberals, dependent upon them.
Not likely.
They seem not to grasp that there are many many many of us who’d rather eat a bowl full of broken glass than live in their crowded, expensive urban centers under their ridiculous micromanagement.
To them, we are children. Not fully formed humans, who can't be trusted to do right by themselves, let alone 'the planet.'
So, they don't figure that we're capable of reactions any greater than tantrums, and forget that we are able to adapt to their gamesmanship.
By leaving their domains, to name one of many adaptations.
This is why they seek power at the national level, rather than simply rejoicing in their blue enclaves and letting the benighted stay in their red states. They can't stand that we don't bend the knee.
They project. Because THEY aren’t capable of reactions greater than tantrums, they assume no one is.
And yes, the whole idea of federalism - local/regional governance, tailored to the needs and desires of people who may be unlike them - is pure anathema.
On an only vaguely related note, I'm meeting some friends in the DC area next week. I first figured to take an Amtrak down - it's very convenient to where I live - but I looked up the ticket prices and realized that it'll cost me significantly less to drive, even in my sports car with premium gas.
That's not supposed to be how it works, in their world.
“Our public servants don't really serve us as much as they try to manage us. That so many of them do their best work in figuring how to elude the limits of the Constitution they've sworn to uphold and defend tells us what we need to know.“
I bet those bike lanes work real well when the city gets a foot of snow! Oy vey.
This made me think of the ridiculous roundabouts they installed in my city, single ones and a multi-lane. It's not a huge city, like 60k I think, but yeah. I redirect every chance I get to avoid those
I have a gut opinion - that he was an authoritarian thug who imposed his will on the metro area, with some disastrous outcomes (see: South Bronx), and quite possibly a racist, but I've read such disparate accounts of him that I can't say my opinion is fully formed.

Of course, their world is fantasy land.

Peter, speaking of the Belt Parkway and NYC roadways, what is your opinion of the legacy of Robert Moses?
