Black Lives Matter STARTED as a planned thing (NOT a grass roots movement) - a couple of Marxists created it on Twitter years ago. The idea that these things start our good and then turn bad is mistaken - they start off bad.
There was a grass roots movement right after the George Floyd killing that was legit... and lasted about 5 weeks before BLM (the organization) co-opted it for their own selfish purposes.
I *think* the actual genesis might go back to 2013, to the Traevon Martin incident. But, it picked up a lot of steam, so to speak, after Geo. Floyd died on Memorial Day, 2020.
