Great thought experiment!

There is no workable civil means to seperate, though those who advocate for su h a solution have not put the thought into it that your article has.

My guess for the future is that America as an imperfect Republic continues to devolve into a socialist state, with a tiny elite giving platitudes, slogans, and 3rd world health care to the 99%.

Would not surprise me. The ratchet of big government seems to only be capable of turning in one direction.

I don’t know many “liberals,” but, I do see many posts from so-called “Republicans” on Facebook about “civil war,” “prepping,” etc.. I will say that I think it is always a “good thing” to be “prepared.” Example: tornadoes recently knocked electrical power out in parts of Georgia for several days, and some people lost some of the (expensive, these days) food in their freezers and refrigerators... or, they were without water... etc.. I hope you see my point. But, imagine that no “help” is on the way for the foreseeable future. Imagine that there is a civil war, and some hungry strangers show up at your home, they produce weapons, and demand food. You and your son are able to ... um... “deal with the threat,” but, your son gets shot through the bicep during the fracas. During an actual civil war, you might drive your son toward a hospital, using your precious gasoline, only to encounter other people who want your “stuff,” and, even if they don’t stop you, the hospital may be surrounded by people who hold diametrically opposite political views to yours. Sound far-fetched? I saw those things happen frequently while I was in Afghanistan, during four deployments. If more people knew how awful war *can* be, they would not be eager to have a civil war.

I agree very much. I was never a soldier, but I was a Boy Scout and I think "Be Prepared" is an excellent motto. Thanks for your thoughtful comment and for your service to our country!

I was posted to Panama from 1991-1994. There, the university students would often burn tires and protest…….. until it began to rain, then they would go home and sleep and eat. In other words, they were “committed” but to a point. I think a lot of people who claim to want a civil war think that convenience stores will still be open, selling gas, and many of the “Bread and Circuses” they are accustomed to will continue unhampered. Connectivity? Don’t count on that: the Taliban used to blow up cell towers.
