I have a dishwasher, and glad I do, for occasionally washing dishes a couple times a year. It's daily use is as a dish drainer, where I place hand-washed dishes until dried, then put away. So handy, as it removes drying dishes from sight and countertop.
The shower heads I have are old enuf to have allowed [immediately upon purchase] removing the flow-restricting washer on the inside. Good to know that I can rebel as needed by drilling, should I be forced to buy a newer restricted-flow shower head requiring same. Somewhat regularly I soak the head in vinegar to dislodge calcium buildup.
I have never bought a new washer or dryer. Have never bought a new car. I have bought a new refrigerator and will rue the day it goes bum.
I have a “modern” GE washing machine that doesn’t have an agitator: it does a poor job. Even when set on, “Heavy Soil,” clothes frequently have to be re-washed.
Yes, top loader. I recently read a piece by a guy named Tal Bachman, and he noticed the same thing. He says Speed Queen still makes an (expensive) washing machine that actually gets clothes clean.
That was one of my decisions I made when buying my set 4 years ago. It had to be basic (no fancy bells and whistles), and it had to have the agitator. With the non-agitator, top load washer, you have to load the clothes in a certain way in order for the machine to wash properly. I don't have the time or patience for that!
I'm dreading the day when I'll need a new car or fridge. Everything comes with so much technology, bells and whistles, all in the name of "efficiency". I'm an old school, just the basics kind of person. Keep it simple and I'm happy

Top loader?
We have an LG front loader that actually works pretty well.

This takes the term "unwashed masses" a bit too literally.
