There is also the point that a government contractor will have less oversight and in the case of home improvement type jobs where a homeowner will not accept a shoddy or less than par job, a government will let it slide. I have lived this working for the government in NYC. A plumber or electrician would come in to do a job and by the end, those of us who had experience with those type of jobs would face palm. It is 100% true that tradesman that work for a government are higher paid for lesser work. I’ve seen it firsthand.

Most government and political issues revolve around two things - money 💴 and power 💪. Any time it’s not obvious why something is being done/proposed, just examine the underlying money and power implications. That is where you’ll find clarity.

A couple of times I had the task of selecting furniture for new buildings at my public community college. We had to work with district-approved vendors. They wanted $10,000 for an ordinary couch.
