Last week, the Associated Press tweeted a style tip, suggesting that writers use the term “semi-automatic rifle” rather than "assault weapon" or "assault rifle," ostensibly because the latter terms have become "highly politicized."
Peter, well done as always! Whenever you craft your next blog on firearms issues, suggest you include a paragraph describing 1934 NFA that severely restricted fully auto and selective fire weapons.
Soon our military will be adopting suppressors for rifles and even machine guns. They provide acoustic and visual cover plus make it easier to hear orders in a firefight. They make perfect sense for civilians, too.
Some are presenting suppressors as a public health matter, with good cause. It's a very tall hill to climb, at least with this president, but all these fights are long fights.
Anytime terminology is changed my spidey senses start tingling. See: global warming is now climate change. You have to ask yourself what is the motive and who will gain from it. Good luck finding one that is altruistic and not nefarious.

The NFA is not something that's going away any time soon. Trying would be a giant waste of political capital, so I'm not inclined to argue about it.
I did run this bit about silencers, which are regulated as NFA items, two months ago. This is a fight that's worth fighting.

It's the euphemism treadmill. They wore out assault weapon.
