I specifically chose not to judge HFCS vs cane sugar from anything other than consumer choice, because doing so suggests to some that the government should meddle even more.
Exactly. I don’t think government should be involved at all. If they weren’t we wouldn’t have the hfcs health issue to begin with.
Waxing nostalgic. I used to walk to school about 3 miles some of way was past sugar cane fields when I was growing up in south Florida. After harvest there would be chunks left behind. We’d pick a chunk to chew on on the way to school and a chunk on the way home. Eventually they would clean up the slash for cattle and plow it under. Was a treat while it lasted.
Still. You stated something that was demonstrably false:
"The current scientific consensus is that there's no difference between these two forms of sugar as far as human health is concerned."
I think your argument would be more effective (and true) if you simply said that had the government not meddled, American soda would probably still use cane sugar.
I seek out beverages with cane sugar if I find I want one once in a while. Allergic to corn to the existent that even to much xanthan gum gives me problems. It’s only 10pm. I like the Dr Pepper when I find the bottles from Mexico. The Coke you can find almost every where now. They’re a treat with som rum once in a while.
Pipe dream, but wouldn’t it be better!
Technically, hfcs is the same as sugar in terms of direct effects. But there are indications it affects health in indirect ways. Look at this study:
