Immigrants are pouring into the United States by the millions. They come here, not seeking freebies or handouts, but rather, for the hope of a better life. It seems that conditions in their home countries - mostly Central and South America, but also the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia - are pretty dismal. Poverty, violence, oppression, rampant crime - all the things that make life miserable. They leave behind their homes and friends and possessions, and make long, arduous, dangerous, expensive journeys, often for thousands of miles, to come to America, the Land of the Free, where their family has at least some chance for peace and stability.
I appreciate what you have to say, but (gee, I'm sure you're surprised), I have a couple of disagreements. First, the U.N. is pretty much worthless. They won't accomplish anything much except fomenting hate for Israel.
Then there's this: "For that matter, no politician that I’m aware of is truly for it either, and in fact, they all wish this problem would just go away." Actually, I think *many* politicians (especially on the left) very much want it, because they're trying (very much intentionally) to crash the system. This is Cloward-Piven on steroids. They seek to overwhelm the system so badly that the government has no choice but to assume total control. We have too many totalitarians in elected office, and the immigration problem isn't just caused by the poor conditions in the countries *some* immigrants are fleeing (some are not fleeing - many do come for handouts, and others come for more nefarious purposes - do a quick search for terrorist watch list encounters at the border), it is also caused by politicians advertising the desire to allow immigrants entrance (and fighting every possible method for preventing the influx - see: ending Title 42 and overturning the Remain in Mexico policy) and offering them handouts. How many mayors have declared their cities "sanctuary cities" for illegal immigrants? That is, of course, until they receive a busload or two of said immigrants at which point they cry how their system is strained beyond the breaking point.
I do like your thinking though, and the fact that you're willing to point out that we, the taxpayers, are footing a bill for which we should hold no responsibility. Good article David.
MIgrants pay thousands of dollars to the "coyotes" who sneak them across the border and then often leave them to die in the desert. Maybe the US should undercut the coyotes and simply charge admission to anyone who want to immigrate.
But...I fear you are displaying a bit too much common sense than can be had from our politburo.
